Proper Brushing

  • Place the head of your toothbrush in a tilted position such that the bristles are in contact with the teeth at an angle of 45 degrees. Involve small circular movements severally on all surfaces of the teeth. This is a good way to scrap away tartar that may have started to build up.
  • Use the same brushing technique on all inner surfaces of the teeth.
  • Target the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
  • Do not use a mouthwash to rinse your mouth after brushing as this removes the protective toothpaste.
  • Get a fresh breath by brushing your tongue.
  • Avoid eating or drinking immediately after brushing. Allow an interval of about 30 minutes.

Dentists recommend that you change your toothbrush every three to four months. Old toothbrushes are not effective in removing tartar because of worn out bristles.

Mouth Flossing and Using Mouthwash

It helps to remove food particles between your teeth and in the gum line where a tooth brush cannot be used. Food particles deeply lodged in the gum line can lead to gum infection when left here for long. It is advisable that you floss your mouth once daily. This can be done before or after a normal tooth brushing preferably at night. Consult your dentist on the best flossing techniques.

Use alcohol-free mouthwash is another way to prevent tooth decay and gum infection. Dentists recommend use of fluoride-containing fluoride. Choose a specific time to use mouthwash, maybe after lunch. Similar to brushing, do not eat or drink immediately after using mouthwash. Mouthwash removes potential groups of bacteria found in the mouth and reduces chances of tartar build up.

Diet

Dentists recommend that you limit the amount of sugar in your meals and drinks to prevent tooth cavities. This reduces the amount of acid formed in the mouth. Avoid sugary snacks after main meals. Artificial sweeteners which do not promote tooth decay are a good choice. Use of sugar-free gum after meals leads to production saliva which neutralizes the acid hence preventing erosion of your tooth enamel.
